Rain ruins opener after SA strike early blow in women’s match against Windies

Rain ruined the first Twenty20 International between West Indies Women and South Africa Women here Tuesday, resulting in a no-result.

West Indies were asked to chase 136 for win and had reached 21 for one in the third over of their reply when the game was called off due to severe weather.

The hosts had already taken two important blows prior to the rain, with hard-hitting opener Deandra Dottin forced to retire hurt for four on the third pitch of the innings.

In the third over, her partner Hayley Matthews was caught at the wicket of fast bowler Marizanne Kapp with the score at 21.

After electing to bat first, the Proteas rallied to 135 for three off their 20 overs, with Kapp top-scoring with 36, Laura Wolvaardt with 35, and Lizelle Lee with 30.

Lee hit four fours in a run-a-ball effort, putting up 31 off 26 balls for the first wicket with Dane van Niekerk (15), then adding 45 for the second wicket with Kapp, who hit three fours off 43 deliveries.

Wolvaardt smashed a pair of fours and sixes in a 21-ball cameo with Tazmin Brits, putting on 48 in an unbroken fourth wicket stand (14).

The second game is scheduled for the same venue tomorrow.
