Thompson-Herah wins Diamond League final

Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah capped off a stellar 2021 season by winning the Wanda Diamond League 100m final on Thursday at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich, Switzerland, in a Weltklasse meet record time of 10.65 seconds (0.6m/s).

Thompson-Herah swept through the pack with a devastating second half of the race, with Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith finishing second in a season-best 10.87 seconds and Switzerland’s Ajla del Ponte third in 10.93 seconds.

Natasha Morrison, the other Jamaican competitor, finished seventh in 11.10 seconds.

Shanieka Ricketts finished second in the women’s triple jump, leapfrogging compatriot Kimberly Williams, who recorded a best mark of 14.47m (1.3m/s) on her penultimate attempt.

Ricketts posted a fourth-round best of 14.41m (0.4m/s) and had to dig deep to make the top two. Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela won with a meet record of 15.48m (0.3m/s), beating the previous record of 15.03m achieved by Russian Anna Biryukova in 1995.

Rojas, the Olympic champion, only had three valid leaps, all of which were beyond the previous record of 15.27m (-0.4m/s) in the first round and 15.22m (-0.3m/s) in the fifth.
